The resort
A dance hall that grew a hotel on top of it
The oldest part of Rio Dorado is the hall at the bottom: a wide wooden room built in 1964 beside a boat yard on the golden river, with a sprung floor that a family of trumpet players paid for twice over. For thirty years it was a dance hall and nothing else. Then the boat yard closed, the family bought the land behind it, and the hotel went up in two stages — eight storeys of rooms in 1998, the rooftop pool deck and the new casino floor in 2019.
You can still hear what the place was. The hall, now called La Pista, has live music six nights a week, and the brass section on a Friday is loud enough that we glazed the lower rooms twice. Guests who want quiet take the garden side; guests who came for the noise ask for a room above the hall and get exactly what they wanted.
One floor down from reception sits the Salón Trueno casino floor, which is the reason the whole resort is advertised to adults. It is a real casino: live dealers, a cage, a door team that checks identity cards. Everything happens here, in this building, in person. Nothing on this website can be played, staked or paid for.
